American, 1921 - 1998

Richard Hoffman Reinhardt was born and raised in Philadelphia and trained at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Art from 1939 to 1946 with Virginia Wireman Curtin and Douglas Gilchrist. Upon Curtin's departure from the school which had been renamed Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) Reinhardt assumed the role of director of the Jewelry and Silversmithing Department. He was influential and inspired many future metalsmiths, including Olaf Skoogfors, Myra Mimlitsch-Gray, and Wesley Emmons. He became Dean of Visual Arts in 1985 and retired a year later.
