David Wojnarowicz

American, 1954 - 1992

Wojnarowicz responded to the deaths of friends from AIDS, and his own eventual diagnosis, with searing anger at government inaction and public indifference to the epidemic. For Sex Series, which consists of eight photographic montages, he appropriated stock images of a train, a steamship, aerial views of New York City, and other everyday scenes. Wojnarowicz printed them in negative with circular insets depicting sexual acts, overlaying some of the compositions with news articles and government reports about AIDS and diary entries about homosexual encounters.
