David WojnarowiczAmerican, 1954 - 1992
Wojnarowicz’s art has been at the heart of several public controversies. In March 1990, after Sex Series (which consists of eight photographic montages, including this print) was included in an exhibition partially funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Reverend Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association sent a mass-mailing with details of the circular insets, urging voters to demand an end to NEA funding. Wojnarowicz responded by suing Wildmon and the association for copyright infringement and libel, an unprecedented action by an artist against a conservative Christian group. Wojnarowicz won and received a symbolic settlement of $1.00, which he demanded in the form of a check personally signed by Wildmon.
