Chelsea Wall #1

Sean Scully

American (born Ireland), born 1945

Chelsea Wall #1 was the first major work that Sean Scully completed in his studio on West 17th Street, in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. The painting both captures the spirit of the postindustrial urban landscape and relates specifically to local architecture. Scully has referred to it as seemingly “full of light and air”—a description evocative of the nearby Hudson River piers and equally apt to the composition’s distinctively flag-like, multicolored bands.
