Daily #20

Thomas Demand

German, born 1964

To make Daily #20, Thomas Demand first used his cell phone to capture a snapshot of a cup on a sill. He used that snapshot as the basis for a life-size model, which he painstakingly crafted from colored paper. After completing the paper model, he photographed it. The work you see here is a picture derived from a picture. Yet it is also a photograph of a real object—the paper sculpture. Daily #20 is the product of the artist’s thoughtful, earnest labor, but at the same it confronts us with the banality of a world awash in photographs.
