Félix Bracquemond’s use and combination of Japanizing elements in this large ceramic masterwork is highly original, ranging from the lobed shape of the dish to the breaking-waves pattern surrounding the border and the dark brown glaze that colors the ground. The plant forms that swirl in the center of the dish are related to elements in Bracquemond’s “Fleurs et Rubans” Service (“Flowers and Ribbons” Service), also from 1879, whose lively scrolled curves anticipated Art Nouveau designs. An identical model of this large dish is in the collection of the Petit Palais museum in Paris.
