The St-te Quack

Artist/maker unknown

Etched by a studiously anonymous artist, this is one of the more vicious of several political caricatures attacking Lord Bute, the British prime minister, in 1762. Bute is pictured as a quack doctor on a platform, while the Princess of Wales, with whom he was rumored to have had a liaison, is shown as a tightrope dancer impaled by an enormous boot (Bute's name was so pronounced). Other references in the print allude to events of the day, recent newspaper articles, etc.
