Tankard with the Bust of a Nobleman, Stags, and Scenes of Bear Hunts

Artist/maker unknown

Image 1 of 21 / 2

Portraits of couples and individuals appear frequently on vessels associated with Annaberg, alongside a rich repertoire of ornamental motifs. Covered with a brown clay slip before firing, these wares have a dark finish that made them suitable for coloring with low-fired enamels. Some of the busts may show members of the nobility; the likeness on this piece is sometimes identified as Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony (ruled 1656โ€“80).
