Guardian Figure

Artist/maker unknown

Image 1 of 21 / 2

The Chinese placed guardian figures inside the entrances of tombs. The size of these tomb figures was regulated by law: a large piece such as this must have been commissioned for a high-ranking member of the nobility as a testimony to his wealth in this life and a reassurance to his spirit in the next.
