Guanyin, Bodhisattva of Compassion

Qiao Bin

Chinese, active c. 1481 - 1507

Wearing a crown with an image of the seated Buddha, Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, sits at ease above a serpentine dragon and mythical feline animal. Her form and lustrous three-colored glaze characterize figures made by the famous Qiao family of artisans.

Ink inscriptions on the side of the sculpture’s base indicate the names of the donor and the Buddhist temple in northern Shanxi province where devotees would pray for an auspicious rebirth for themselves and future generations.
