c. 1502-1503
Coat of Arms with Lion and Rooster
Albrecht DürerGerman, 1471 - 1528
The fact that this coat of arms has not been connected to a family makes it likely that Dürer produced this engraving to showcase his dazzling skill with the burin. The exuberant foliage, the mane of the rearing lion, the glinting helmet, and the feathers of the cock all are cut into the plate in a virtuoso display of his unrivaled ability to render a variety of distinctive textures.
