Shawl

Artist/maker unknown

The unusual motif of floral bouquets tied together with bow knots reflects early European design influence on Indian shawls. It is possible that the Indian weaver misunderstood the bow knot motif, or simply chose to reinterpret it, for instead of using one color it has a blue bow, yellow knot, and red streamers. According to family tradition, this shawl is identical to one owned by Martha Washington.
