A Multitude of Mountains and Accumulated Snow

Jin Jie

Chinese, active early 18th century

Scholar-gentlemen sometimes embraced depictions of cold and snowy landscapes like this one as an escape from daily life. Such scenes of undisturbed purity were considered a type of spiritual dwelling and, for some, represented the lands of the immortals. The sweeping curves of the rocky peaks, known as "dragon veins," encapsulate the mysterious energy of the mountains and the cultivated spirit of the upright scholar.
