Spring Landscape

School of Sesshū Tōyō, Japan

1420 - 1506

The theme of this landscape is seasonal, but it also depicts another beloved Chinese subject that Japanese artists employed, the “Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang.” This poetic motif refers to the scenery in present-day Hunan Province where the Xiao and Xiang Rivers converge into West Lake. The “Spring Landscape” is also a rendering of the scene known as “Mountain Market Clear with Rising Mist.”
