Philadelphia merchant and auctioneer Henry D. Mandeville traveled to Canton, China, in 1825 to purchase fine teas and other goods. According to family tradition, this tea chest was a gift to Mandeville from the wealthy Cantonese tea merchant Hou Qua, with whom Mandeville did most of his business.
