The teabowl (chawan) used in the tea ceremony differs, in form and function, from those used for food and drink in Japanese everyday life. The chawan cherished by the practitioner of tea is used exclusively in the preparation of whipped powdered tea and its essential characteristics adhere to that function. Teabowls are usually solidly potted, of generous proportions, and have a wide mouth to facilitate the whipping of the powdered tea.
