William Lathrop was considered one of the first Pennsylvania Impressionists, although his intimate, poetic compositions were less influential among younger artists than the monumental paintings of Daniel Garber or Edward Redfield. Lathrop's preference for working in the studio, rather than out-of-doors, distinguished him from other artists in the group. He was also associated with a wider circle of American Impressionists, including J. Alden Weir and John Henry Twachtman, both of whom worked in Connecticut and New York.
