Woolworth from the River

John Marin

American, 1870 - 1953

By 1916 Marin felt such a close connection with the Woolworth Building in New York City that he referred to it as simply Woolworth in the title. In showing the skyscraper from behind, the artist calls attention to its silhouette, which is reminiscent of the spire-and-nave format of many early American churches.
