Movement--Grain Elevators, No. 1

John Marin

American, 1870 - 1953

In late 1916 and early 1917, Marin etched six plates that are among the most inventive works he ever made. Three depict grain elevators in the freight yards of Weehawken, New Jersey, an industrial site that had immediately attracted the artist on his return from Europe in 1910. Marin captured the dynamic character of his subject by overlaying the etched outlines with transparent blocks of ink applied randomly to the plate with a rubber pad before printing. This technique made each impression unique.
