Kent first visited the eastern coast of the Canadian island of Newfoundland in 1910 and moved his family to the island in 1914. He was particularly impressed by the austere beauty of the terrain and the dignity of the rugged fishermen and seal hunters who plied their dangerous living on the icy North Atlantic. Whereas accounts of Kent’s later trips would appear as autobiographical travel narratives, the artist’s Newfoundland experience and the drawings he made there never formed the basis of a book.
