Rainbow Valley, Tierra del Fuego
Rockwell KentAmerican, 1882 - 1971
Kent went to Tierra del Fuego with the intention of sailing around the southern tip of South America, some of the world’s most treacherous waters. When the lifeboat that he converted into a sailing vessel proved unfit for the voyage, the artist set off instead on foot, determined to reach land’s end. This drawing depicts Ole Ytterock, Kent’s first mate and hiking companion, taking a rest in the midst of their arduous trek across the mountain terrain. The pair were the first nonnatives to traverse this stretch of remote territory.
