An artist from New Orleans, Caroline Durieux lived in Mexico from 1926 to 1936. She made her first lithographs in 1932 with Emilio Amero at the art academy in Mexico City, at the suggestion of Carl Zigrosser. Later the same year she learned how to etch from Howard Cook in Taxco, where she and her husband had a vacation house. Most of her lithographs, like this one poke fun at self-satisfied members of the Mexican middle classes. She also created a smaller number of etchings which feature unvarnished portraits of the poor and the needy.
