"Pedestal" Chair

Image 1 of 31 / 3

In 1940, Saarinen submitted several molded shell chairs, designed in collaboration with Charles Eames, in the Museum of Modern Art's Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition. Following that event, Saarinen was preoccupied by the molded shell concept for nearly twenty years. The "Pedestal" chair, conceived by Saarinen around 1955, was part of a series of chairs, stools, and tables that had a single supporting stem to "clear up the slum of legs."
