Around 1883 Eakins began exploring classical themes, a genre popular at the time. In this idyllic relief, the artist recalls the sculptural frieze of the Greek Parthenon, plaster copies of which lined the walls of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Eakins viewed the Parthenon frieze as "the highest perfection of relief."
