Woman's Reception Dress

Callot Soeurs, owned by four sisters, was considered by one writer in 1906 as the most expensive fashion house in Paris. It was renowned for chiffon, georgette, and organdy gowns and blouses that often incorporated antique lace and ribbons. The exotic detailing that marked many of its designs is seen in this white velvet gown for winter 1910. The straight, narrow silhouette is trimmed with fur, a feature of Callot Soeurs' collections that season, and includes Ottoman-inspired bead embroidery. The gown was worn by Gertrude Houston Henry, who made her social debut in 1909 in Philadelphia.
