The Franciscan
José Clemente OrozcoMexican, 1883 - 1949
American travelers to Mexico brought back excited reports of the power of the murals Orozco painted in the patio of the National Preparatory School in 1923-26. Their enthusiasm inspired Orozco to create a series of lithographs showing details from some of the frescoes. To appeal to the admirers of the murals, in his lithograph of a Franciscan priest embracing an emaciated Indian, seen here, Orozco reproduced the curved top of the original fresco at the school.
