Woman's Bag with Views of Paris

Artist/maker unknown

Image 1 of 21 / 2

When narrow Neoclassical skirts made the bulk of hidden pockets unacceptable, women had nowhere to store necessary items. Small bags that once carried needlework were adapted as a new external accessory, sometimes called reticules. This typically minute bag is made of lacy knit set in an elaborate gilt frame and embellished with gemlike architectural scenes.
