Weeders Trophy with Lid

Olaf Skoogfors

American (born Sweden), 1930 - 1975

Image 1 of 21 / 2

Raised in the tradition of Scandinavian form and ornament, Olaf Skoogfors studied metalsmithing at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (now the University of the Arts). Despite a tragically short career of only eighteen years, he became one of the most important American silversmiths of the post-World War II era. The flower on the top of this reliquary-like trophy is appropriate to The Weeders, a women's garden club that has been active in Philadelphia since 1913. The work was commissioned by Louise Elkins Sinkler in memory of her friend Isabel Müller Wetherill and to honor the service of the club's presidents.
