Mounted Bowl with Lid

Artist/maker unknown

Image 1 of 21 / 2

The shape of this bowl is one of the most common of Silla kingdom stoneware. There are several speculations about the reason for the perforated stand attached to the bowl. One is that the perforations lessened the chance of the bowl cracking while being fired. Another is that a small fire was lit under the bowl to heat food. The third, and most accepted, explanation is that it was simply a ritualistic ware and that the stand served a decorative purpose.
