Piola was the leading artist in Genoa in the second half of the seventeenth century, providing large-scale decorative frescoes for many of the city's major churches and palaces. A prolific draughtsman with a distinctive pen-and-wash style, he left many surviving drawings, which are now in public and private collections around the world.
