In search of new markets, potters from Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia migrated to the Piedmont region of North Carolina, where rich desposits of clay were discovered in the early nineteenth century. They produced traditional forms and continued to use wood-fired kilns into the twentieth century. The Jugtown Pottery represents one of the last of these traditional potteries still producing wares in the South.
