Souvenir Painting of a Woman in Blue

Artist/maker unknown

Derived from imagery used in paintings of goddesses, pictures of beautiful women became a favorite motif among Kalighat painters. The women's features are so stylized as to become generic, but the portraits may well have been intended to represent literary figures, famous actresses, or particular characters from popular culture in the late nineteenth century.
