The Angel Appearing to Hagar and Ishmael in the Wilderness

Giovanni Battista Gaulli (called il Baciccio)

Italian, 1639 - 1709

Genoa-born Gaulli departed his native city for Rome as a young man and soon became a protégé of Rome's leading sculptor, one of the most famous artists in all of Europe, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Gaulli left many drawings, and this sheet is typical of his assured command of subtle gradations of wash applied with both wet and dry brush.
