Cake Basket

Image 1 of 31 / 3

This elegant, Federal-style cake basket was made using the silvermaking technique of wirework, in which individually bent and soldered elements were used to produce elegant, open forms. This technique is rarely seen in American samples.

Samuel Williamson (1772-1848) was one of Philadelphia's leading silversmiths during the Federal period. His innovative adaptations of the styles of earlier domestic silver forms demonstrated his knowledge of the latest neoclassical designs.
