Krishna Disguised as a Woman Approaches Radha

Artist/maker unknown

A silver moon and stars light the lush foliage where peacocks hide their heads in sleep as Krishna and Radha, his favorite gopi, pursue their loveplay by exchanging clothes and identities. Blue-complexioned Krishna is draped in an emerald sari and jewelry, and holds a vina (stringed instrument) that is often played by women. He approaches his beloved Radha, who sits coyly beneath a banana tree. Although she wears female clothing, her identification with Krishna is indicated by the bright orange-yellow of her garments, a holy color in which Krishna is often clad. The motif of Krishna and Radha switching genders exquisitely represents the total identification between worshiper and deity that is the result of mystical love.
