Rama's Brother, Lakshmana, Meets the Monkey General Hanuman

Jamini Roy

Indian, 1887 - 1972

The artist Jamini Roy looked to the many vernacular painting traditions of his home region of Bengal to construct a vocabulary of simplified forms done in bold, flat colors. Indeed, this scene from the Ramayana, a sacred epic, evokes comparison with the pata (narrative scroll) tradition. Rather than being part of a larger narrative, this single image stands alone as an expression of and tribute to Bengal's distinctive folk culture.
