Dove Bradshaw

American, born 1949

To create her Carbon Removal drawings, Bradshaw lays small piles of materials such as grass, wool, and tea onto sheets of sticky tape; then she places the tacky side of the sheet with adhered particles facedown on a piece of carbon paper, ink side up, and carefully rubs. She makes no effort to "direct" the image or compose the piece: the exposed sticky tape pulls the ink off the carbon paper, and whatever remains constitutes the drawing. Made of ordinary materials found around the house and yard, these drawings conform to Bradshaw's aesthetic of chance and indeterminacy, in which the distinctions between art and everyday life become blurred.
