Dedication (Zueignung)

Ferdinand Olivier

German, 1785 - 1841

German caption: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben (Joh. XI.25)

Translation: I am the resurrection, and the life (John 11:25)

Olivier introduced his album of landscapes representing the days of the week (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1997-170-1--7) with a dedication plate designed to resemble a sculpted panel on a medieval altarpiece. The centerpiece of the composition is a wayside shrine hanging on an oak tree with two angels seated at the base of the trunk: on the left, Archangel Michael repelling Satan, and on the right, Archangel Gabriel welcoming a group of young artists. The figures in the corners represent sculpture, architecture, painting, and poetry.

Tags on the tree branches bear the names of sixty-four artists Olivier considered the leading members of the new movement in the arts. Nineteen of those artists are represented in this exhibition, among them Peter von Cornelius, Caspar David Friedrich, Joseph Anton Koch, Carl Wilhelm Kolbe the Elder, Friedrich Overbeck, Franz Pforr, Johann Anton Ramboux, Johann Christian Reinhart, and Karl Friedrich Schinkel.
