Spot Storm Brewing
Tom BurckhardtAmerican, born 1964
Burckhardt's small watercolors and collages on old book pages consist of abstract or figurative shapes or patterns that always gently suggest the existence of an underlying narrative. Humorous, kitschy, yet intelligent and sophisticated, his images and colors are often borrowed from the art of non-Western cultures. A central design element often dominates his compositions, as seen here, and these sometimes acquire the appearance of quasi-organic entities imbued with a subjective presence.
