Late 19th century, in the style of the 17th century?

Tabernacle with the Gathering of Manna

Artist/maker unknown

This unusual piece is a puzzle: is it a rare functional object painted in an earlier, perhaps vernacular style, or is it a piece made to deceive from a moment when the market for maiolica was expanding rapidly and distinctive pieces were in demand? It belonged formerly to the important collector of maiolica J. Pierpont Morgan.
