About the Collection
The European Art department oversees more than 22,000 objects, ranging chronologically from the middle ages to the early 20th century. This expansive collection includes arms and armor, ceramics, glass, enamels, coins and medals, furniture, jewelry, lighting, metalwork, sculpture, stained glass, tapestries, textiles, wallpaper, architectural elements, and tools and utensils.
Thanks to generations of Philadelphia collectors, the museum’s holdings are particularly strong in early Netherlandish, Italian, Dutch, British, and French painting with noteworthy Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collections. The department also manages the Rodin Museum.
