Friday Night: Indigenous Heritage Edition

Join us for a night filled with music and dance by Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac, film shorts curated by Blackstar Film Festival, and gallery talks that highlight indigenous stories in the collection. Community partners tabling throughout the night showcase some of the different work happening through indigenous-focused organizations in Philadelphia.

Performance: Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac | Great Stair Hall | 6–6:15 p.m., 7–7:15 p.m., 8–8:15 p.m.
Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac performs dance traditions stemming from indigenous Aztec culture. The mission of Ollin Yoliztli Calmecac is to investigate, understand, and raise awareness of the Mexicaoyotl culture, which flourished in Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spanish in 1492.

Pop-Up Talk: The Wampum Belt and the Museum | Meet in the Great Stair Hall | 6:30–6:45 p.m. and 7:30–7:45 p.m.
Join Rosalie Hooper, the PMA’s Associate Director of Interpretation, for a 15-minute pop-up talk about this celebrated Wampum Belt. According to Penn family accounts, Lenape leader Tamanend gave this Wampum Belt to William Penn to mark the occasion of the Treaty of Shackamaxon in 1682. Learn about its history and how it is contextualized in the Early American galleries.

These talks are first come, first served until a capacity of 20 is met.

Living Memory Film Shorts with BlackStar Film Festival | Eli Kirk Price | 6–8:00 p.m.
This film program brings together a collection of works by Indigenous filmmakers whose practices center cultural memory, sovereignty, and creative resistance. Through a range of visual languages and storytelling traditions, the films honor enduring relationships to land, community, and spirit. Films will run on a loop. Total run time is 73 minutes.
