About

This exhibition celebrates the remarkable paintings, drawings, and prints by women artists in the Keith and Jim Straw collection. The local Philadelphia couple began collecting art in the 1970s, when it was still relatively unusual to focus a collection on women artists. They initially pursued works by artists active in the 1800s, but over time their collection expanded to include living makers with whom the pair often built personal relationships. In celebration of the promised gift of works from the Straw collection to the Philadelphia Art Museum, this exhibition features notable works by Lilly Martin Spencer, Suzanne Valadon, Betye Saar, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Kay WalkingStick, among others. Together, these artworks celebrate the resilience and creativity of women artists through time.
