Regatta in "Volta di Canal"
Francesco GuardiItalian (active Venice), 1712 - 1793
This painting depicts a regatta that was held in 1740 in honor of a Polish prince. Special floats were built by Venetian noblemen to display their wealth and status. The English author Mary Montagu marveled, "there was enough of them to look like a little fleet." Guardi actually painted this picture many years after the event, basing his composition on a print made at the time of the regatta by the artist Michele Marieschi.
