Portrait of a Young Man, possibly Giuliano de' Medici

Sandro Botticelli (Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi)

Italian (active Florence and Rome), 1445 - 1510

Images of handsome young Florentine men, particularly those popularized by Botticelli and his school, projected an image of a city full of youthful energy. This portrait may represent Giuliano de’ Medici, who was assassinated in 1478 in a conspiracy against the Medici family and their governance of Florence.
