Exhortation

Auguste Rodin

French, 1840 - 1917

Image 1 of 51 / 5

Rodin's practice of continuous modeling left him with an abundance of complete figures, many of which were created with no definite aim in mind. Exhortation is an assemblage of such preexisting parts, perhaps intended to crown a monument. The composition leaves the relationship between the two figures as mysterious as any in Rodin's work. Timeless and without attributes, they exist in a realm where gesture is the most vital means of communication.
