The images in Peter Doig's paintings and prints derive from film and photography. He selects motifs (and sometimes combines them) from an extensive personal archive consisting of his own snapshots, tourist postcards, movie stills, and clippings from newspapers and magazines, which he mines for material that will act as intermediaries for the scenes in his head. Doig selects unusual colors to heighten sensory experience and to evoke a mood or memory. In Muldenberg, he uses a tangy pinkish-orange to restage a postcard view of a German dam as a Romantic landscape suffused with the bleached early morning sunlight that recalls Caspar David Friedrich's (German, 1774-1849) luminous moonlit scenes.
