The scene depicted on this plate, taken from an unidentified engraving, may depict the Greek mythology story of the rescue of Andromeda by Perseus. Cepheus, the king of Ethiopia, was forced to sacrifice his beautiful daughter, Andromeda, to a sea monster sent by Poseidon. Perseus, the son of Zeus, had fallen in love with Andromeda and won her hand in marriage by slaying the monster.
