The Doge Giving Thanks in the Great Council Chamber

Giovanni Battista Brustolon

Italian, 1712 - 1796

In 1763, the publisher Ludovico Furlanetto commissioned Canaletto to create a series of drawings showing the numerous state and religious festivals over which the Doge presided. Furlanetto later engaged the printmaker Giovanni Battista Brustolon to produce etchings after the drawings. The set commemorated the election of Alvise Giovanni Mocenigo as the new Doge. Here, Mocenigo greets and gives thanks to the Great Council of nobles in a ritual that took place after each election.
