Sugar Bowl with Cover
Image 1 of 31 / 3
The decoration on this sugar bowl, part of a rare breakfast set, a dark ground with silver and gold designs, imitates the ancient Japanese lacquer technique known as makie (literally "sprinkled picture"). The Japanese inro on view is an example of this technique. The service was likely owned by the Duchess of Mazarin (1735-1781), a collector of, among other things, Japanese lacquer boxes.
